Why Your Wedding Cake Should Be Part of the Wedding Design - Not an Afterthought

When you’re planning a wedding, there are certain design decisions that happen early. The venue. The dress. The flowers. The overall look and feel of the day.

The wedding cake sometimes comes later.

But after years of designing custom wedding cakes for couples throughout New Jersey and New York City, I think the cake deserves a place in the design conversation much earlier.

Your wedding cake will be part of the room, your photographs and one of the traditions your guests actually gather around. When it’s designed with the rest of the wedding in mind, it feels like it belongs there.

Your Wedding Cake Should Feel Connected to Your Wedding

I never think a wedding cake needs to match every detail of a wedding. In fact, I usually prefer when it doesn’t.

Instead, I look for details that can inspire the design.

It might be the movement or texture of your wedding dress. The shape of a floral arrangement. A detail from your invitation suite. The architecture of your venue. Or simply the feeling you want the room to have.

Those elements can inspire a cake without being copied literally.

That’s one of my favorite parts of designing a custom wedding cake for a New Jersey or New York City wedding. We’re creating something specifically for your celebration rather than choosing a design from a catalog.

What Should You Bring to a Wedding Cake Consultation?

You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what you want your cake to look like.

Bring anything that helps tell me what your wedding will feel like: photos of your dress, flowers, invitation, linens, venue or other design details you love.

And yes, bring the Pinterest photos too.

They’re helpful because they show me what catches your eye. But rather than recreating someone else’s cake, I use those images to understand what you’re drawn to and then create something that feels like yours.

If you’re wondering how personal details can be incorporated without overwhelming the design, I wrote more about how to personalize a luxury wedding cake tastefully.

Don’t Forget That Your Wedding Cake Has to Taste Incredible

This is the part I will never compromise on.

A beautiful cake that doesn’t taste wonderful has missed half the assignment.

Every Purple Cow Cakery wedding cake is baked from scratch and finished in Swiss meringue buttercream. I love buttercream because it gives me the clean, refined finish I want while still giving guests a cake they genuinely enjoy eating.

If you’re deciding between buttercream and fondant, read why so many NJ couples are choosing buttercream wedding cakes.

Flavor can be personal too. Depending on the size of your cake, you may even choose different flavors for different tiers. Here’s my guide to how many wedding cake flavors you should choose.

When Should You Start Planning Your Wedding Cake?

For most couples, I recommend booking your wedding cake about 6–12 months before the wedding, particularly for popular spring and fall dates.

You don’t need every floral or décor decision finalized before booking. We can refine the design as those pieces come together.

Booking earlier simply gives you the opportunity to choose the cake designer whose style and approach you love rather than waiting until your wedding is nearly here and hoping your date is still available.

I intentionally limit the number of wedding cakes I accept so I can personally handle the process from consultation and design through delivery and setup.

What Makes a Wedding Cake Feel Luxurious?

For me, luxury isn’t about adding more decoration.

It’s thoughtful design. Beautiful proportions. A flawless buttercream finish. Details that make sense together. Incredible flavor. And a cake that looks completely at home when it’s placed in the room.

Sometimes that means a tall, dramatic multi-tier cake covered in flowers. Sometimes it means smooth white buttercream with one beautifully placed detail.

The right cake is the one that feels right for your wedding.
