Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before Booking Your Wedding Cake

Planning your wedding cake should feel exciting, not overwhelming. At Purple Cow Cakery, I believe your cake should be as thoughtfully designed and memorable as every other detail of your wedding day.

Below are the most frequently asked questions couples ask when booking a custom wedding cake — answered clearly to help you plan with confidence.

How much wedding cake do we need for our guest count?

The amount of cake you need depends on your guest count, serving size, and whether you’re offering additional desserts. Many couples choose to serve cake to every guest, while others opt for a smaller cake paired with a dessert table.

During your consultation, I’ll guide you on the ideal cake size based on your reception style and ensure you have exactly what you need — no more, no less.

How far in advance should we book our wedding cake?

Most couples book their wedding cake 6–12 months in advance, especially for peak wedding season dates. Popular dates fill quickly and availability is limited to ensure every cake receives the attention it deserves.

I recommend booking as soon as your venue and date are secured.

Can each tier be a different flavor?

Yes — and many couples love this option. Each tier can be a different cake flavor and filling, allowing you to offer variety while keeping a cohesive design.

My menu is thoughtfully curated to balance crowd-pleasing favorites with elevated, sophisticated flavor combinations.

Do you offer wedding cake tastings?

Yes. Wedding cake tastings are offered by appointment and are designed to help you confidently select flavors you love. Tastings are available to couples booking a cake of 100 servings or more and part of the consultation process, depending on timing and availability.

I believe your cake should taste just as incredible as it looks.

How much does a custom wedding cake cost?

Wedding cake pricing varies based on size, design complexity, and finishing details. Custom wedding cakes typically begin at a set minimum, with final pricing tailored to your vision.

During your consultation, you’ll receive a clear proposal outlining design, servings, delivery, and setup — no surprises.

Can you create a custom design inspired by photos we love?

Absolutely. Every wedding cake I create is custom-designed to reflect your personal style, wedding aesthetic, and vision.

I'm happy to use inspiration photos as a starting point while creating a design that feels uniquely yours and complements your overall wedding design.

Do you deliver and set up the wedding cake at our venue?

Yes. In fact, I insist on it. Professional delivery and on-site setup are included to ensure your cake arrives safely and is beautifully presented.

I coordinate directly with your venue and planner so you don’t have to worry about a thing on your wedding day.

Do you offer gluten-free wedding cakes or special dietary options?

I offer select dietary-friendly options and are happy to discuss individual needs during your consultation. While our kitchen is not allergen-free, transparency and care are always part of the conversation.

What if our guest count changes?

I understand that guest counts can shift. Final serving numbers are typically due a few weeks before the wedding, allowing me to adjust your cake size accordingly.

Specific deadlines and flexibility are outlined clearly in your contract.

What is required to reserve our wedding date?

A signed agreement and retainer are required to secure your wedding date. This ensures your date is reserved exclusively for you and allows me to begin the design process.

Final payment timelines and design change deadlines are clearly communicated so you can plan with ease.

Ready to Begin Designing Your Wedding Cake?

Your wedding cake should feel personal, intentional, and unforgettable — both in design and flavor.

If you’re ready to begin the process or would like to schedule a consultation, I’d love to hear from you.
